The Bug Jam, Santa Pod Raceway. 22nd-24th July 2005.

Qualifying.

Once again it was time for the Super Mods to return to their roots and perform at the Bug Jam. In it's 19th year and showing no signs of slowing down, in years past the event has always been a good one for those in attendance. Although the crowd obviously hold all things air-cooled dear to their hearts, they're always both appreciative and inquisitive about the cars, and were clearly impressed by the racing. First out in qualifying were Rob Millward and Ian Marshall. After 20 plus years working with Graham Ellis, Rob was finally rewarded with the chance to make some laps in the Olds. After making some initial passes during the RWYB sessions, Rob was soon looking like a veteran and carded a 7.72 @ 173 MPH to take the top spot...a place that he'd not relinquish. After a season away, the revamped Highlander returned better than ever. After a bit of a thrash to pass the tech procedure, the normally-aspirated Chevy ran an easy 8.52 @ 162 MPH to put a number on the board. Next up, it was a battle of the F-bodies as Craig Gibbs and Andy Kirk put in their maiden passes. After a lot of midnight oil burning and a little help from their friends, Craig and the Obsession gang finally ousted the misfire woes and ran a problem free 8.191 @ 162.54. Looking for the 7.7 second zone was Andy Kirk, but an overly aggressive clutch treatment caused some tire spin issues. Despite this 'Rat Fink'™ recovered to a 7.924 @ 168 to slot in at number 2. Rounding out session one were Andy Hone and Steve Rawlings. After encountering a few mechanical problems at the last couple of events, Fred, Mick and the rest of the team decided to take things easy first time out with an 8.15 @ 165 MPH. Steve however struggled to find an initial setup and shut off with a troubled 9.36 @ 147 MPH.

Session two was once again headed by the Ellis Racing Cutlass and Rob was becoming increasinly comfortable in the hot seat, as evidenced by knocking a tenth of his reaction time. Despite this, no improvement was found and a 7.85 was the result. In the other lane was Steve Rawlings in the stealth Supra. Again looking to struggle somewhat, an 8.52 @ 165 was half a second away from Steve's usual ET. Due to the short turnaround these were the only two cars to compete in this slot.

Session three was soon upon us and again it was 'Rat Fink'™ against 'Obsession'. Much to the appreciation of the watching crowd, both Camaros burned out side-by-side 'til well past the 60ft clocks. Still with some traction woes, the Kirk Motorsport's '67 notched up a slighly quicker 7.914 @ 169 MPH to consolidate 2nd place, while Craig ran a touch softer with an 8.241. After discovering a lower than expected torque converter stall speed, Ian Marshall was just out for a little more track time but still managed to find a tenth of a second to record a fine 8.441 @ 164 MPH.

The fourth and final session offered only 20 minutes to get the cars ready and after a quick 'splash and dash' by the Kirk Motorsport team, they were accomponied only by Rob Millward. With Kev Perkins calling the shots with the tune-up it was no surprise to see Rob smash his personal best with a 7.679 @ 175.74 MPH. With such a short turnaround time, the clutch in Andy's Camaro was still a tad too hot and slipped to a 7.953 @ 169 MPH, despite a new personal best speed of 143 at the 1/8th.

Final qualifying positions were as follows:

.
Driver ET Speed
Rob Millward 7.679 175.74
Andy Kirk 7.914 169.21
Andy Hone 8.136 165.58
Craig Gibbs 8.191 162.54
Ian Marshall 8.445 162.54
Steve Rawlings 8.521 165.35
Simon Farmer 9.153 124.33

Eliminations

Round 1

Unfortunately mother nature decided not to let the cars out to play on race day, as 30 minutes before they were due out it rained and failed to stop for the rest of the event. With only a handful of points being awarded, the championship has stayed pretty much as was, with the Ellis Racing team holding a commanding lead at the top and Andy Kirk looking secure in second. With Kev Taylor's Capri currently sidelined while receiving a transmission upgrade, Andy Hone is also looking safe in third. The next round is rapidly approaching, which will be the Allstar Nationals held over the August Bank Holiday. Before this however, numerous teams are taking the show to Europe to put on a demonstration eliminator at Rico Anthes' NitrOlypx in Hockenheim. With this being only a week before, any breakage could prove costly.....
