Promising start for Kirk Motorsport

After a long winter of major changes, everyone at Kirk Motorsport was looking forward to the first meeting of 2005. With so many new parts on the car and the little matter of a clutch for Andy to get used to, just getting through the meeting unscathed was the order of the day.

Andy tells the story...."We had to sit out the first round of qualifying whilst a few loose ends were tied up and to make sure we were fully prepared. The second session proved annoying with huge amounts of clutch slippage, the engine RPM never even dropped with the shift! One more lap on Sunday showed yet more clutch woes, but we carded an 8.63 to at least put us in the show."

"Monday dawned with an early call for the Super Mod's and a first round meeting with Paul Brooks. After a slight jump on the tree, I saw Paul pull up along side and then dissapear, as he unfortunately succumbed to mechanical failure. An 8.30 was the result and the PSI Camaro lived to fight another round. Round two was another tough battle as we were up against Rob Smallworth, who beat us in the final here in 2004. Once again our opponent suffered mechanical problems and Rob had to abort, meanwhile still plagued by clutch problems we notched up an 8.35. For the semi-final we were greeted with a bye, and after tinkering in the bellhousing again the car finally started to respond a little with an 8.20. That put us in the final against Kev Perkins and we knew our hands were pretty tied. Despite realising what the problem with the clutch was, we had no time to fix it so decided just to concentrate on a couple more suspension changes. Around the 60ft. mark the car just hit some tyre shake and refused to play ball as Kev ran a 7.77 for the victory."

"With the next round at Shakespeare County approaching we've decided to put © Rat Fink on a diet as she carrying a few excess pounds. As yet it's undecided what route we're going to go down, but as I speak we have a smaller fuel cell on it's way from Andy Robinson Race Cars. There are also a number of clutch and fuel system changes that will be addressed for the next meeting as we need to start and pick up the pace a little more."

Andy would like to thank Laurie at PSI for his ever-present support during the event, Clive Bond from Ultimate Race Cars for being on hand during the course of the weekend, Andy Robinson for his assistance, Pro Stock racer Kenneth Soderstrom for the wheelie bar setup, his hard working crew and finally wife Barbara for a highly successful first meeting as class rep.
