2005 was a busy season for Ellis Racing
Crew Chief Rob Millward, dividing his time between driving,
crewing and tuning during various stages of the year. And
not always on the same car!......
"Hi
everyone, I'd like to say thanks to everyone involved in Super
Mod for a great year. It's had too many ups & downs to count
but fortunately we (Ellis Racing) have endured our share &
come out on top. I give special thanks to Graham for letting
me loose at the helm of the Olds, I hadn't been in the seat
since '88 so I didn't know if I still had it in me, it seems
I still do. After completing the obligatory observed runs at
the RWYB during the Bug Jam, we made the decision that I would
drive for the event. The car is so well built and has been refined
for this class, so it's a joy to drive. It inspires confidence
and I ended up qualifying no 1 with a 7.67. I was really starting
to enjoy things then came the rain!"
"
Kev drove at the next one. Then I got a call from Steve Rawlings,
would I like to drive his Supra at the finals? I thought long
and hard, and after a few second said yes! He thought a fresh
look at his car from someone else might find him a "bit
more". Kev agreed to lend a hand, and after a day at Steve's
we thought we should be able to achieve a reasonable result."
"
Friday of the finals, we worked late preparing the Olds and
getting the Supra to fit me. We thought everything was fine
'til Saturday morning. I got in, put the belts on, only to find
there was not enough adjustment to get them snug. Fortunately
it rained so that gave us time for Mick to do his stuff and
make it all fit. Then it was time to test...The car went a bit
sideways on the burnout, but I remembered that it did with Steve,
then into stage...It is a strange experience putting a car you
know very little about on the chip and side-stepping the clutch!
The car moved towards the centerline but came back as the front
wheels came down, I could feel the car moving about a bit but
I wasn't going to lift unless I had to in case we only got the
one qualifying session. A 7.95 was the result, then the bubble
was burst, 7 pounds under weight! We thought we had compensated
for our weight difference but we were wrong!"
"After more rain and a great clear up job by the 'Pod crew,
we got another at about 8.45pm. I hadn't driven at night since
the old doorslammers days of the late 80's, but at least they
had headlights and I only ran 11's @ 120mph. Oh well should
be interesting! It was, an 8.0, the car moved around a bit less
then the chute didn't come out. 166mph in the dark in someone
elses car and a field coming up! Stopped it on the brakes, got
weighed and this time we were OK."
"We
got "Tiger Tim" in the first round, we knew it would
be tough so we put a bit more in the motor. Tim got the holeshot
and was to keep the advantage to the other end, beating me by
a couple of hundredths. However, as we ran a 7.82 we weren't
too disappointed. Steve seemed happy too, as that is the quickest
the car has gone and there should be more to come. Thanks for
the drive Steve."
"Oh
well back to being a crew chief for a while (must go change
those plugs on the Olds for next year!). Well done to everyone
and see you all at the AGM.
