Smallworth Weighs Up The Easter Thunderball....
"Following
two test sessions where we could not get rid of tyre shake,
the car went into Webster Race Engineering to be base lined.
We had already decided to put on some new Toyo slicks, purchased
from Gordon Appleton at Wheelgame, so following a hectic week,
we found ourselves arriving at Jon's at 7pm on the Thursday
evening before the Easter Weekend."
"Thanks
to Jon and all his team who had found a problem with the set
up, we arrived at the track excited about the upcoming four
days of racing."
"With
the new slicks fitted, it allowed us to evaluate the pressures
the tyres required to give a good "footprint" and
we now realise that we weren't running the tyres at quite the
correct pressure."
Over
the subsequent three days of qualifying, we made some adjustments
to the clutch but not having any accurate weighing scales, crew
chief Barry came up with an idea which you can see in the photos
below, to determine the difference in weight between an ally
nut and bolt and a steel nut and bolt for the clutch fingers!"
"Following
this "brain wave", we had another pass and found ourselves
in number one qualifying spot with a personal best of 7.61 et.
WELL DONE BARRY!!"
"Qualifying number 1 brought with it a pleasent suprise
as Barbara Kirk came over over and gave me an envelope. Put
up out of his own pocket, Dave Stokes who crews with Paul Brooks,
is giving a cash prize for No 1 qualifier. What great support!
Thanks very much Dave!"
"We
went into finals day with high expectations but ended up being
disappointed with the overall result after being eliminated
by Tim Garlick. Congratulations and thanks must go to Tim for
his support from Heliarc Technology Ltd, and well done to him
and his team."
"Also,
well done to all the Super Modified racers for putting on a
great show and a special congrats to the Kirk Family for their
win."
"So
once home and weighing up the weekend, I decided not to be too
disappointed as the '55 Chevy is the fastest car out there so
far, and I'm already deep into alterations and upgrades ready
for the next meeting."
"Thanks
to all the guys who helped me out that weekend; Barry, Bryan
and Jim and everyone else who came up to see us."
"ROLL
ON THE BIG BANG!"
