Highs And Lows Of Super Modified!
"Our
season so far has been mixed with lows and highs".
"When
the new 481ci engine was dyno'ed up at ICE, I quoted that the
car had been prepared as good as it has ever been...."what
a statement"....."considering by the third National
round at Shakespeare County Raceway, we had become 1st
round fodder!!!"
"One
of our problems was because the car had a smaller engine, and
we had also removed 250lb of lead from over the rear wheels,
so we could not get it to hook up properly and it just didn't
feel right going down the track."
"We
had been changing so many things each round and the idea of
changing one thing at a time had long gone".
"We
went testing at the Redline Rumble and made 3 passes with new
Toyo slicks. The first 2 passes showed signs of mprovement and
then on the 3rd run, it all came together and we run 7.70 ET
so we couldn't wait for the Summer Nationals".
"At
the Summer Nationals, the good numbers continued with a 7.741
1st pass, which actually held on as the number one qualifying
run. In eliminations, we kept chipping away each round, and
were fortunate to win the meeting with a holeshot victory in
the final. This was one of the best races I've ever had. Once
all the shifts were made, I looked right and saw the front fender
of the Oldsmobile level all the way up the track. Over the line,
there could've only been about 2 - 3 feet in it".
"The
highlights were that the qualifying ladder had four cars within
0.06 secs.....what a Super Modified field! A measure of the
guys in the Super Mod class was that only 5 minutes after winning,
the first phone call I received was from Graham Ellis whose
car, driven by Rob Millward, we had just beaten! Top Man!"
"I
would like to thank all the guys for helping me in the past,
present and hopefully the future, especially Barry and Jim at
the Summer Nationals. We have such a good laugh and I can't
thank them enough."
"We
were pitted in between two great car teams with all our friends,
namely Gordon Appleton's crew and Ray White's crew but I think
the 55 Chevy crew were the busiest!"
"Here's
to the rest of the season."
"Cheers"
Rob
